Teens & Young Adults
Ever since graduate school, I have been passionate about working with adolescents (ages 12-19) and young adults (ages 20-25). During these developmental stages, a person is transitioning from childhood to adulthood. These phases are very difficult for anyone to navigate this strange, awkward and pivotal time.
According to NAMI, 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24. These numbers are only rising ever since the shelter-in-place ordinances were put into effect. As a teen therapist in the San Mateo area, I have seen these effects first-hand.
Adolescence (ages 12-19) and young adulthood (ages 20-25) are a transition from childhood to adulthood. These phases are very difficult but also a pivotal stage of development.
So what is happening during this strange and awkward time?
- Adolescence (ages 12-19) are becoming independent for the very first time. They are forming their own interests and hobbies that are different from when they were children. Perhaps they are dedicating more time for friends and spending less time with family.
- Young Adults (ages 20-25) have a better sense of who they are. But they are exploring who they are while they are engaged in complex relationships, such as, romantic, work, and/or school. In other words, they are trying to establish a sense of identity within their community.
So why do teens and young adults need therapy?
Both age groups tend to ask really deep questions, like “who am I?” and “what do I stand for?” These questions can also lead to confusion and insecurity because they are not able to find their place in this world...yet. Sometimes this process leads to depression or anxiety. In some cases, someone can get stuck in this stage and unable to live up to their potential.
How can therapy help?
During our therapy sessions, we will attempt to answer some of those deep questions in a safe and calm environment. We will try to figure out what’s stopping you from achieving your goals.
Note: Three (3) complimentary Parent Support sessions are provided with Adolescent individual therapy services. $20 will be charged for every additional 30 minute session.
Note To Parents: If your child is not ready for therapy, Parent Support Sessions are available. Please go to Short Term Services for more information.
